After two years of independence of India, in 1949 the Department of Botany was established by the first Principal Ms. Sudha Sen. In 2007, BSc Honours course was started by realising the keen interest in the subject under the guidance of Ms. Mohinder Kaur HOD. In 2017, PG course was started by the efforts of Dr Manju Sahni HOD for providing higher studies at college level. In 2022, a Research and teaching Lab was established under the guidance of Ms Ramanjit Bhatti (HOD) and untiring efforts of Dr. Tarunpreet Singh. It is a matter of great pride that PG Department of Botany, Govt. College for Girls Ludhiana has been selected for support under CURIE (Consolidation of University Research for Innovation and Excellence) Programme of Department of Science & Technology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, for 3 years. Govt. College for Girls Ludhiana is the only Govt. College of whole North India and among only 2 Govt. Colleges Pan India, selected for receiving grant under CURIE programme.
