About the Department:

 

Zoology refers to the study of animals, their biodiversity, habitat, animal behaviour and beneficial aspects to the society. It also includes the interaction of animal kingdom in their ecosystems their habits, structure, embryology, distribution, evolution, and extinct species. Various disciplines in zoology including comparative zoology, animal physiology, entomology, invertebrates & vertebrates zoology, classification of animals are studied at B.Sc. level. Keeping in view the above progressive branch of science, ‘Department of Zoology’ has been established since 01-07-1949 in the premises of Government College for Girls, Ludhiana (affiliated to Punjab university, Chandigarh). Our vision aims at providing a comprehensive Bachelor of science program with Zoology as a major subject. Besides preparing the students for their future in Zoological sciences, teaching field & research orientation programmes , it encourages the students to be innovative , helpful & supportive to the society. It lays emphasis on the mission to provide students with quality education through the latest teaching-learning methodologies in the field of zoology and biological sciences. The mission of the Zoology Department is to impart basic education of animals for undergraduate students and to develop a research interest in various field of zoology. The department offers the Zoology subject to B.Sc Medical (regular) & B.Sc- Biochemistry to more than 200 students . Students are provided guidance for vermicomposting techniques & practices, which are helpful for them to start vermicomposting unit at home and large scale production. The department have three well qualified assistant professors with higher degree such as SLET, M.Phil, Ph.D. and three well experienced laboratory staff members. The department have two well equipped labs with ICT facilities ( PC & Smart Board) and departmental library for the students.

Creative flair lit up art and cultural gigs with an eco-spin. Partnering with NGOs, our college bloomed into a tree-planting powerhouse – where every tree planted, every student a nature champ.MLA Gogi Ji, our honored chief guest, along with Principal Mam, joined students in planting trees during the vibrant Van Mahotsav celebration, symbolizing a collective commitment to environmental stewardship.

The spirited procession echoed with impactful slogans like "Protect the Ozone, Secure our Tomorrow" and "Every Action Counts!" Nukkad nataks brought the cause to life, engaging the entire college community. Amidst this lively atmosphere, pledges for ozone protection resonated, creating a collective vow to safeguard our planet's vital shield. The rally became a powerful expression of unity and determination, marking our college's active role in championing environmental awareness.

The session enlightened students on the intricacies of this eco-friendly practice, and Dr. Verma conducted practical sessions, equipping students with hands-on skills to apply vermicomposting in real-life scenarios. This holistic approach to learning showcased our commitment to merging theory with practical application, empowering students with valuable, actionable knowledge. 6 26-09-2023 FACE PAINTING ACTIVITY 10 At the Science Society's installation ceremony, the Zoology Department, under the banner motto "Conservation for Sustainability," organized a vibrant face painting event. Students expressed their commitment to the conservation of endangered species with every stroke of paint, turning faces into canvases of environmental advocacy. The motto echoed: "Colors for Conservation - Express, Protect, Sustain!
7 26-09-2023 SCULPTURE MAKING 5 Under the umbrella theme of "Conservation of Endangered Species for Environmental Sustainability," the Zoology Department orchestrated a compelling sculpture-making activity during the Science Society's installation. As students molded their visions into tangible forms, the event became a testament to creativity aligned with environmental consciousness. The tagline resonated: "Sculpting a Future - Shape by Shape, Species by Species."
8 26-09-2023 COLLAGE MAKING 15 Amid the Science Society's installation ceremony, the Zoology Department fostered artistic expression through a collage-making activity. Students passionately crafted visual narratives, emphasizing the urgent need for endangered species conservation. The event's tagline encapsulated the essence: "Collage for Conservation - Piecing Together a Sustainable Future."
9 15-01-2024 BEST OUT OF WASTE COMPETITION 8 Encourage students to showcase their creativity and craftsmanship. Promote awareness about the importance of nests in the ecosystem. Provide a platform for students to collaborate and exchange ideas. Huge strength of students participated in the competition. 
10 12-02-2024 REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AWARENESS CAMPAIGN 20  Raise awareness about reproductive health issues among adolescent girls. Provide access to accurate information on reproductive health, including puberty, menstruation, contraception, and STI prevention. Facilitate access to reproductive health services, including counseling and medical care.
 Empower girls to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and well-being.  Challenge harmful social norms and stigma surrounding reproductive health topics.  create a supportive environment for discussing reproductive health issues openly.
 
11 13-02-2024 An educational trip to Science city  150 Science Society organized one day trip to Science City on 13-02- 2024. 150 students of B.Sc. final year went to the trip. Professor incharges of the trip were Dr. Mamta Kochar, Mrs. Kiran gupta, Dr. Madhavi vashisth, Dr. Harmneet singh, Mrs. Amandeep & Dr. Falwinder verma . The trip to science city proved to be an enriching and educational experience. Upon arrival students were greeted by the striking architecture of the science center, setting the stage for an exciting day of discovery. The exhibits covered a wide range of scientific disciplines, catering to visitors of all ages. From interactive displays demonstrating principles of physics and chemistry to hands on experimental science, there was something for everyone. One highlight of the visit was the planetarium, where students embarked on a journey through the cosmos, learning about the wonders of the universe and the latest discoveries in astronomy
12 28-02-2024 NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY. 70 Science Society celebrated National Science Day on 28-02-2024 by organising a cartoon making competition on the theme “Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat and Environment Sustainability”. Huge number of students participated in the competition and exciting gifts and prizes were given to the students. Models related to science and technology were also displayed in the event. Many more exciting activities were also performed like quiz competition, fun games related to science and a ppt was also presented in order to spread awareness about science developments. Information about many new discoveries and advancement in technology was given through the speech by students.
13 22-03-2024 SHAHANI MEMORIAL QUIZ & CLOSING CEREMONY 75 The closing ceremony of Science Society took place on 22-03-2024. This event included Shahani Memorial Quiz Competition. The chief guest of the event was Vice Principal, Mrs. Gurjinder Kaur ji and all the other teacher incharges of science societ along of with science faculty. The prize winners of various competitions, which were organised by the science society in the past 1 year were awarded with certificates and trophies. The society members were also acknowledged with trophies and certificates

2 5th February,2025 World Cancer Awareness Day by B.Sc-3rd year 55 Zoology department organised an event to create awareness on cancer.  A PowerPoint presentation was given by a student Ms. Jashanpreet Kaur  on world cancer day , then a speech was delivered by a student Ms. Mehak. All the students showed enthusiastic participation and were interestingly listening in the event. A fun quiz activity was organised by students Ms. Palak and Ms. Tanisha and students who actively participated won gifts
3 14th August, 2024 Seminar on topic Digestion by B.Sc-2nd year 40 Zoology department organized an activity on topic digestion which was done by Namisha and Tanisha in which students were divided into two teams, team A and team B one student was supposed to put questions to both teams turn wise . Score were writing on the blackboard.we have made this activity more interesting by putting buzzer system . Students were enjoying the activity as well they also learn from it. One team was supposed to give another team a funny buzzer or a tongue twister and this thing convert the activity into game.

4 4th February 2025 Seminar on Microplastics bt B.Sc-2nd year 71 Zoology department organized an activity on the topic microplastics which was given by Roopam and Rajdeep in which we have discussed ,what effect does microplastics have on human life and what are its types and how can it be reduced, how crucial role do microplastics play, we learnt all this with examples as well as we should not use plastic bags, instead use cloth bags, we should give up disposable plates, glasses, etc.they contain plastic in them which goes to human body with food or liqui we take. Microplastics are more dangerous for women because women have to give birth to a life, We should avoid using plastics
5 31st January , 2025 SEMINAR ON SKELETAL SYSTEM IN HUMAN BODY by B.Sc-1st year 75 Department of Zoology organized seminar on Skeletal system The seminar included following activities - o A power point presentation on Skeletal system o Acknowledging students regarding skeletal system - delivering a short lecture. Under the guidance of our respected ma’am Principal Mrs. Suman Lata ji , the event aimed to learn about the importance of skeletal system in human being. Garisha mukhija & Ankita Lath explained about different bones in human body and their importance. Students observed animals in natural or semi-natural settings, focusing on physical features, movement patterns, feeding habits, and responses to environmental stimuli. This hands-on activity encouraged careful observation, patience, and scientific thinking.The activity also improved their photography skills, data recording abilities, and interest in wildlife research. Additionally, it strengthened their appreciation for biodiversity and ethical animal observation. Overall, the activity proved to be an effective and interactive learning method, enhancing both theoretical knowledge and practical understanding in zoology.
3 06-02-2026  SEMINAR ON TOPIC: “FLOW WITHOUT FEAR” AN INSIGHT ON MENSTRUAL HEALTH Miss. ShivaniFinal Year Ayurveda Student & emerging public speaker 85 The information regarding the menstrual cycle was explained in detail according to Ayurvedic principles. The session provided a clear understanding of the Ayurvedic concept of the menstrual cycle, its phases, and its importance in maintaining physical and mental well-being. Various menstrual cycle disorders and related problems were discussed thoroughly, along with their causes, symptoms, and effects as described in Ayurveda.In addition to the explanation, a question-and-answer (Q&A) session was conducted, during which the speakers actively interacted with us.  Overall, the session was informative, interactive, and beneficial, enhancing our knowledge and awareness about menstrual health according to Ayurveda.
4 11-02-2026 QUIZ COMPETITION IN B.Sc-1st year class Class teachers & Zoology representatives conducted this quiz competition 73 A quiz competition on the subject of Zoology was successfully conducted. The competition was organized in three rounds, each designed to test the knowledge, understanding, and quick thinking abilities of the participants. The rounds were interesting, informative, and engaging, covering various topics related to zoology. Nearly 73 students were present and actively participated in the event. The enthusiasm and involvement of all participants made the competition lively and competitive. The event was well-organized, and the rules were clearly explained before the beginning of each round.Overall, the quiz competition was an enjoyable and educational experience. It helped students to enhance their subject knowledge, improve teamwork skills, and build confidence. 5 14-02-2026 A Visit to Vermicomposting Unit at College Campus Dr. Falwinder Verma explained students the process involved in converting organic waste into nutrient-rich compost using earthworms. 27 An informative session on the Vermicompost Unit was conducted for the students. The information regarding vermicomposting was clearly explained, including its meaning, importance, and the process involved in converting organic waste into nutrient-rich compost using earthworms. Students were guided about the materials required for setting up a vermicompost unit, such as organic waste, soil, and suitable species of earthworms. The benefits of vermicomposting, including improvement of soil fertility, eco-friendly waste management, and promotion of sustainable agriculture, were also discussed in detail.Around 27 students were present during the session, and they actively participated by asking questions and observing the demonstration carefully. The session helped students understand the practical importance of vermicomposting in environmental conservation and organic farming. Overall, the program was informative, interactive, and beneficial for enhancing students’ practical knowledge and environmental awareness.
