PG Department Of Music Instrumental
The PG Department of Music Instrumental at Government College for Girls, Ludhiana was introduced in 1950. The Department aims at protecting the cultural heritage of the nation – promoting national integration and world peace through music – and developing intellectual, emotional and spiritual quotient of youth. Its mission is to broaden the horizons of the students' minds towards folk, classical and western music as well as to expose them to the scientific, philosophical, psychological, sociological, aesthetic and religious aspects of Indian music. Its objective is to prepare the students to earn their livelihood. Initially, the department had only undergraduate classes, but keeping in view the keen interest of the students, Honors course was started in 1975 and Post graduate course in 1976 under the headship of Mrs. Sawinder Gill. Many top performing artists have served as professors in the department, resulting in students winning top positions in university merits including gold medals, almost every year. Many a time, they have also won Swami Nirvikaran and Sarswati gold medal for standing first in all M.A. courses taken together. Similarly, there have been many gold medalists in the Honors class as well. Presently there are 6 Associate/Assistant Professors in the department, out of which 5 are alumni of this department. Coincidentally, 5 of the 6 professors have been toppers (gold medalists) of the university in their respective pass out sessions. Apart from this, there are 4 tabla instructors in the department. As the department covers 73 years of its successful journey, the infrastructure has been flourished with digital teaching aids, sound system and a large amount of musical instruments (classical, western and folk) including acoustic and electronic instruments.
