The Department of Physical Education was established in year 1943 with the motto “ Discipline & Unity”. It can also be referred as ‘THE DEPARTMENT WITH  A HEART’. The main goal of this department is to develop students and sports leaders of character who are physically and mentally tough by engaging students in activities that promote and enhance a healthy lifestyle, physical fitness, sports, cognitive skills and psychomotor performance. Our college has been excelling in the field of sports since its inception. Every year hundred of players participate in inter-college competitions of Panjab University Chandigarh and other state and national level competitions also. The college provides nurturing and positive sports environment to students for their overall growth and development. Apart from this, students are also continuously imparted knowledge to attain physical fitness, adopt healthy lifestyle and develop a competitive  among them. Students have also proved their mettle by participating multiple national and international tournaments.  Our proud alumni Ms. Sandeep Kaur has  brought laurels to college by bagging 4th position twice in Powerlifting at Asian Championship 2018 and Asian Championship 2023 held in Mongolia and Kerala respectively. Another student Ms. Rajpreet Kaur also made college proud by winning silver medal in  Asian Championship 2017 held in kerala. We have a highly qualified, trained and experienced faculty to train our students in games of their interests. We also have individual trained coaches for different games who provide specialised training to our students for the particular event. Our college organizes Annual Sports Day, intercollege competitions and celebrate National Sports Day & World Physical Education Day every year to promote students participation in sports, foster sportsmanship and to develop national integration and patriotism among students.

Mr.Jasdev Singh Sekhon general Commissioner of Nagar Nigam Ludhiana and Mr. Gurpreet Bassi Gogi M.L.A of Ludhiana were the chief guests of the meet. Students participated various events like as Jumps, throws, races and funny games. Riya Riyal (B.Sc. non. med) declared best player of the meet.

1 29th August 2023 National Sports Day 300 National Sports day were celebrated on 29th August 2023 in the loving memory of Major Dhyan Chand ji, Indian hockey wizard . Total 300 students participated in the event.  Jalandhar Traffic incharge Meena Kumari ji, International weightlifter was the main chief guest few sports students of our college were given honour in this event. students are told about the life and major achievements of Major Dhyan Chand ji on this particular day.
2 17 January 2024 One-day workshop on Martial arts  - The Department of Physical Education organized a one-day workshop on martial arts on 17 January 2024 , conducted in two sessions—morning and evening. The resource person for the workshop was Dr. Simarpreet Kaur, a renowned expert in martial arts. The event aimed to promote physical fitness, self-defense skills, and mental discipline among students.

The workshop started around 9 am and continued till 5pm in the evening. 93 students participated in the event. Both sessions witnessed enthusiastic participation from students. Dr. Simarpreet Kaur shared practical techniques, along with insights into the philosophy of martial arts, emphasizing resilience, focus, and self-confidence. The sessions were interactive, with students actively engaging in learning the techniques demonstrated.

The workshop was well-received and it contributed significantly to students' holistic development
3 6th and 7th March 2024
81th Annual Sports Meet - Annual Sports Meet was organized by GCG. Dr Ashwani Bhalla, deputy director, Department of Higher Education, Punjab, was the chief guest at the prize distribution function. The chief guest congratulated the principal on the college getting Grade A in NAAC accreditation. He urged the students to aim for achieving higher positions in different levels of the government services. Nivedita Sharma, head of Physical Education Department, read the annual report, highlighting achievements of the college students. While Rajina was declared the best athlete, Vani Puri bagged the best player award.

The 82nd annual athletic meet of Government College for Girls (GCG), Ludhiana, concluded on Saturday with Harleen Kaur being adjudged the best athlete while Vani Puri being honoured as the best player of the meet.

The chief guest, Deepak Chopra, principal of Government College (East), Ludhiana, encouraged the students to embrace sportsmanship highlighting the importance of discipline, hard work and perseverance in life. GCG principal Suman Lata expressed her gratitude to the guests and praised the students for their dedication towards sports.

Sharanjit Kaur Parmar, principal of Government College, Raikot, was the guest of honour. Nivedita Sharma, head of the physical education department, highlighted the achievements of GCG’s athletes at the international, national, state, regional, inter-college and inter-university levels.

Principal Parminder Gill and Gurpreet Kaur, sports coaches Gursharan Singh, Balbir Singh, Surjeet Kaur, Jaspal Singh and Anita Malhotra, along with members of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) were present at the event.

In the 3,000m race, Raveena (BA I) clinched the gold, followed by Rajina (BA III) and Priyanka (BA I). The 800m race saw Kirandeep Bawa (BA II) take the top spot, with Priyanka (BA II) and Shreya (BA I) finishing second and third. Shreya (BA II) secured first place in the 100m race, followed by Khushi (BA III) and Vishali (BCA III).

In the musical chairs for guests, Deepak Chopra stood first, with Suman Lata and Sharanjit Kaur Parmar securing second and third places. The male staff race was won by Swaran Singh, followed by Harjot Singh and Gurmeet Singh. Rashmi Rani stood first in female staff race, followed by Mandeep Kaur and Rosy Nagpal finishing at second and third. Parth took gold in the children’s race, with Krishnoor and Sargun finishing second and third.

The lab staff race was dominated by Vicky, followed by Jasveer and Manmohan. Mandeep Kaur came first in the old school race, with Sarita finishing second and Harleen Kaur and Vidya tying for third.
