The Department of English was established since the inception of Government College For Girls, Ludhiana. It offers a vast environment to the students to learn and evolve. Students get various opportunities alongside the completion of their education by which they get well-groomed in terms of communication skills and confidence towards the English language. GCG offers English as a compulsory subject in all the streams and Elective English, Functional English and English Honours to BA Students and Journalism as an add on course to the students from all streams, who are keen to learn and explore English in depth. A faculty of highly educated teachers work together with complete dedication and hard work to make it all a success. Various events and activities are conducted under the guidance of Head of Department and other teachers of the department. Events are organized quite often in the department. Essay writing, poem recitation, debates, elocution, declamation, caption writing including many other activities takes place frequently to upgrade skills and confidence of students towards English language. Various inter college events and district level competitions take place in GCG campus. GCG has won many prizes in intercollege competitions such as debate, declamation, TV interviewing, story writing, essay writing, mock presentation, AD mad show, advertisement copy-writing and many other activities along with overall college trophies too. Extension lectures are delivered to the students and seminars are conducted by specialist in the field of English who are invited especially for this purpose. Field trips and visits to radio station, TV Station and press are also conducted. The infrastructure of college is designed to make learning easier and fun. All classrooms have smart boards which are used to show animated summaries related to syllabus and other education material which is beneficial for students. On top of that the Functional English (media lab), Journalism lab & departmental library looks worth an eye. It has all the required equipment which comes in use such as from a basic ring light to advanced machines which are used for teaching phonetics and improving language. These devices operate by listening the pronunciation and tells the correct pronunciation through the headphones connected to it. The lab has computers, chroma key backdrop, ring light, microphones, cameras and all other latest equipment required in Journalism and English learning. The aim of English department of Government College for Girls is to make students evolve their language and vocabulary and develop confidence through extra-curricular activities along with the completion of their education. Vision of English Department: In the race for excellence, there is no finishing line” Mission Department of English constantly strives to ignite the minds and intellect of the students by imparting quality education through audio-visual aids, extension lectures by eminent scholars, field trips to radio station, TV Station and press etc. Extra-curricular activities like debates, dramatics, declamation contests, poetical recitation competitions, great orations, story narrating, caption writing & slogan writing competitions are organized to hone the literary skills of the students. We endeavour to improve their pronunciation, word accent and above all, enrich their vocabulary for the holistic development of their personalities.

2 OPEN MIC POETRY EVENT Multi-lingual Society organised an Open Mic Poetry Event on 9th September, 2023. Under the teacher’s guidance, President Ishika Jain organised the entire event in Rusa Seminar Hall and encouraged students to participate. 10 THE SOCIETY ORGANISED A ‘BLIND DATE WITH A BOOK’: BOOK EXCHANGE EVENT. The Multilingual Society of GCG hosted a captivating "Blind Date with a Book" event, where students had the opportunity to exchange books. This event received an honorable presence from Principal Mrs. Suman Lata Ji and Vice Principal Mrs. Gurjinder Kaur, as well as esteemed senior staff and English Department teachers. Approximately 35 students participated in this literary exchange, making it a resounding success. 11 3 DAY WORKSHOP The Multilingual Society of GCG, Ludhiana conducted a 3 day workshop aimed at enhancing students' proficiency in various aspects like interview techniques, resume writing, decoding communication and public speaking. The workshop took place from February 1st, 2024 to February 3rd, 2024 in the college auditorium and witnessed an enthusiastic participation of around 250 students. Renowned professionals like Mrs. Binita Jhanji, Dr. Prabhleen Toor and Dr. Anupam Vatsyayan: experienced academics in their fields, served as the resource persons for the workshop. Their wealth of knowledge and practical insights provided invaluable guidance to the attendees.The workshop not only imparted essential skills but also instilled confidence in the participants. 12 Cosplay Monologue Competition  Multilingual Society of Govt. College for Girls, Ludhiana draws to a close with a Cosplay Monologue Competition. College Principal Mrs. Suman Lata was the chief guest. The closing ceremony began with a welcome note from Mrs. Gurjinder Kaur Brar, Head, Dept. of English. It was intelligent foresightedness of Mrs. Gurjinder Kaur to provide a unique platform for the students to perform in a monologue competition. The function continued with prize distribution ceremony for the various posts of multilingual society.
