Chemistry is often called central science for its enriching role in connecting the physical sciences both at fundamental and applied levels. Chemical technologies enhance our quality of life by providing innovative solutions to the problems in health, materials and energy usage. Biochemistry is the basic language of all biological sciences. The major emphasis of biochemistry is to understand thebasic clues of biological systems. This interdisciplinary approach will help tremendously to medical science and nutritional sciences. In Govt. college for Girls Ludhiana, the Chemistry department was established in 1962 and Biochemistry department was introduced in 1994.Vision of the department is to empower the young girls through education by igniting and nurturing enthusiasm, interest and passion in the study of Chemistry and Biochemistry. The department’s mission is to develop and enhance conservation of optimum academic environment to prepare professional graduates in the field of Chemistry and biochemistry, to give broad based knowledge in concepts and principles of Chemistry and biochemistry and to create a stimulating and supporting environment for our students.Students pursuing the degree of B.Sc. Medical and Non-Medical study chemistry. They are offered various theory and practical classes. The department has well qualified faculty with specialization in various fields of their subjects. The faculty are well versed and acquainted with modern knowledge and latest developments in the fields of chemistry and biochemistry. There are three Chemistry labs and one biochemistry lab. These labs are equipped with all relevant apparatus as required per University Norms. The department has its own Book Bank. There are a large number of books related to course taught in undergraduate classes. Needy students are helped by providing books from the book bank. Many students of the department have been able to compete successfully in various exams and are well placed.Ishu Juneja is posted as auditor in Ministry of defence. Gurpreet Kaur Chaggar was awarded B.J Liska outstanding teaching assistant award by Purdue University, U.S. Deepali Jain was awarded Prime Minister fellowship for doctoral studies by Science and Engineering Research Board, DST FICC.
